It’s time to talk trees with John Eisenhower, owner of Integrity Tree Service!

John encourages you to attend an event by the Urban Farm put on this weekend.
Discussing why every home in Phoenix should have edible fruit trees.
Digging down on apricots trees and John’s experiences.
Pruning tips for producing the most fruit and how to make it accessible for picking.
Watering methods for fruit trees.

Callers:

Gary – He planted a few different bushes as a screen wall. Should he let them grow together or try to maintain individual bushes?

Recommendation – Go ahead and let them grow together to provide the wall. There’s no value in keeping them seperate. He can prune back plants that are taking over to keep the wall more uniform.

Sean – His desert willow is growing great, but the root ball seems to be lifting. How should he handle it?

Recommendation – He needs to stake the tree for another year or two to let the roots get established. Prune it if at all possible and get some soil around the base and tamp it down to fill in some of the gaps that may be below the soil. Listen for the details to be sure.

We continue talking about roots and what happens to them during the winter season.
“As go go the roots, so go the shoots” & what that means to your trees.
Fertiizing tree tips and how the winter will help prepare the tree for a great spring growth.
What about deciduous trees?
Compost around the trees can help keep your root system warm and many more reasons that benefit the health of your trees.

Caller:

Bill – His almond trees haven’t produced the last few years, but this year it has exploded. What could have caused this? Can he use the grass clippings to kill of the bermuda lawn and his pecan tree got burned. Will he lose it?

Recommendation – With the pecan tree…once it’s damaged, it’s permanent. It may survive, but it is a handicap. John has used grass clippings to block the sun from growing the lawn. We’re not sure it would work with bermuda since it grows so aggressively.

We answer the rest of Bill’s question on almond trees.

Recommendation – Almond trees require longer chill hours, so growing them in the Valley can be challenging. This could prevent the trees from fruit production.

Trimming To-Do & Not-To-Do’s. “Decreasing the dosage of pruning.”
Leave the leaf drop on the soils through the winter if you can. It helps and Johns shares why.

Joe -He’s been trying to get rid of gopher’s in his front yard. What can he do to get rid of them?

Recommendation – It’s just a long term project & there’s no magical cure. It takes multiple strategies and ongoing hunting. Romey has a home remedy he likes or he could call The Animal Experts in Tucson. He could try MoleMax by Bonide and pick it up at Warner’s Nursery.

After a busy monsoon season it’s prime time for termites and critters, so we sit down the Action Termite Control to make sure you know the warning signs around your home.

Ronnie with Termidor is here to and we discuss why it’s the go-to product on the market for termites.
Why Action Termite is so busy this time of year after the monsoon season.
Different types of treatment for termites. Eliminating and treating specific areas.

John – He was involved with the litigation in the 80’s & 90’s when termites showed up 3 months after he built his home. He shares his experience & how pest control licenses were handled throughout the last 25 years.

Juan – How can he get rid of misquitos in his yard?

Recommendation – Don’t leave standing water on your property and treating the foliage of the plants can help because that’s where they are in the heat of the day.

Gretchen – She has mud tubes and knows she has termites. She’s treated some with foam treatments and termidor. Is her problem because she didn’t drill into her front porch and back patio because they aren’t connected to the house?

Recommendation – Brent talks her through what she can do and why it’s best to use a licensed pest control expert. They could be coming in through the top and her prevention won’t help. You’ll really need to listen to make sure you get the whole picture from Brent.

Nicole – Is their an alternative to all the toxic chemicals that we’re talking about?

Recommendation – Ronnie goes through some of the figures and why it’s considered safe by the EPA. She could consider a baiting system to avoid the chemicals.

Brett – He has a raised planter and he has critters living in and around it. Can he spray the outside of this and not have it effect the vegetables?

Recommendation – Pick a product and read the directions to make sure it’s a safe distance from his garden. He can pick up a Bonide Product from Treeland Nurseries.

Roland – He has trails coming through the travertine tiles on his back patio. They keep moving around. Is there some way to get rid of them?

Recommendation – They sound like ants and Brent talks through using it for Roland’s problem. Use a non-repellant to wipe out the colony.
