Keep your pool equipment running strong all season long

Swimming pools are an essential part of summer in Arizona – especially for those who love to spend time outdoors. Most of the focus is usually on keeping the water clear and inviting. Still, the equipment behind the scenes plays an important role in maintaining a comfortable spot for the family members when it’s too hot to hang.

From pumps and filters to skimmers and plumbing, pool equipment works harder during the summer than at any other time of year. Heat, increased pool usage, and longer operating hours can place added stress on a system that may already be showing signs of wear. Understanding how to care for equipment can help homeowners avoid costly repairs, improve efficiency, and extend the life of their investment.

Why pool equipment matters

Keeping a pool clean is a big job-be sure to get the right equipment!

Pool equipment is responsible for circulating water, filtering out debris, and maintaining proper water quality. When equipment is operating well, a pool is easier to maintain and often less expensive to operate. As Craig O’Grady of Desert Sun Pools, a Rosie on the House Certified Partner, explains, quality equipment is the key performance factor.

“Properly sized equipment makes a pool much more efficient and easier to maintain,” he said. “Given the advancements in pool technology, systems can occasionally be complex or experience mechanical issues. I have used Pentair for over 30 years because they have an exceptional team that provides the consistent support I need to serve my customers.”

An efficient system doesn’t just save energy. It also helps ensure water is circulating properly, easing strain on pumps and filtration while supporting consistent water chemistry. In summer, systems run longer to keep water moving and prevent issues caused by heat and heavy use.

Watch for early warning signs

One of the easiest ways to avoid major repairs is to watch for small problems before they become big issues. O’Grady recommends paying close attention to leaks and odd noises, as they often indicate a need for attention.

“Generally, pool equipment should operate quietly,” he said. “Leaks should be addressed immediately, as a small leak can quickly become a major problem.”

A leaking pump seal, loose fitting, or damaged valve may seem minor at first, but summer heat can accelerate wear and worsen existing issues. Addressing concerns quickly can help prevent equipment failures during the peak swimming season.

Homeowners should also watch for declining water circulation, reduced filter performance, or difficulty maintaining water clarity. These symptoms can sometimes indicate an aging pump, clogged filter, or other mechanical problem that requires a professional assessment.

Establish a weekly maintenance routine

Consistent maintenance remains one of the most effective ways to protect equipment and reduce costs. Debris from landscaping, dust, storms, and increased activity can collect and, left unchecked, restrict water flow and place unnecessary stress on equipment.

Monsoon storms can wreak havoc with a pool’s equipment. Be sure to clean filters regularly

“I recommend checking equipment at least once a week,” O’Grady said. “This includes keeping pump traps and skimmers free of debris, testing water chemistry, and brushing the pool. Avoiding these tasks can lead to costly repairs as time goes on.”

Regular inspections can help homeowners spot leaks, cracks, clogged baskets, or other problems before they affect the entire system. Maintaining proper water chemistry is important, since imbalanced water can contribute to scale buildup, corrosion, and wear and tear.

Choosing equipment that lasts

When it comes to equipment, quality matters. Although new tech has introduced a range of features and automation options, reliability and manufacturer support remain at the top of the list.

“One of the most frequent questions I receive is about the brands we use,” O’Grady said. “I believe it is vital to partner with manufacturers that stand behind their products and offer responsive support.”

As technology evolves, equipment systems have become increasingly advanced. Variable-speed pumps, automated controls, smart monitoring systems, and advanced filtration have their advantages, but they also require dependable support when issues arise.

Recognizing when repairs are no longer the most practical solution can help homeowners avoid recurring expenses and unexpected breakdowns, and equipment age is one factor that may indicate it is time for an update.

“It is time to consider a remodel if the interior surface is rough, tiles are falling off, or the equipment is over 10 years old,” he said.

While some equipment may continue functioning beyond the decade mark, older systems are often less efficient and may require increasingly frequent repairs. Upgrading can improve energy efficiency, simplify maintenance, and increase overall pool performance.

Looking beyond basic repairs

For homeowners who have lived with ongoing frustrations – outdated equipment, recurring repairs, or a pool that no longer fits their lifestyle – a remodel may provide an opportunity to address multiple concerns at once.

Some homeowners may want to restore a pool to proper working condition, while others may be considering a more comprehensive backyard transformation – O’Grady encourages homeowners first to determine the scope of their goals.

“Decide if you want a simple facelift to make the pool functional again or a total backyard transformation,” he said. “When hiring a pool contractor, check how long they have been in business and review their record with the Registrar of Contractors (ROC) to ensure there are no complaints. Always ask for and speak with referrals.”

Modern renovations can include updated finishes, water features, spas, automation systems, outdoor kitchens, and expanded entertainment spaces. Homeowners may even choose to redesign or relocate an existing pool to fit the yard’s layout.

O’Grady said that durability should be a priority when choosing an interior surface. Standard plaster is no longer a budget-friendly alternative because it “lacks the longevity to justify the investment.”

“While modified plasters are an improvement, pebble products have become the standard. It is important to note that many contractors list pebble surface on a bid without specifying a brand,” he said. “After working with nearly every brand on the market over the years, I’ve found that Pebble Tec offers the highest quality and the best manufacturer support.”

A little attention goes a long way

Once you’ve decided on location, materials, and features, O’Grady recommends walking the site with the contractor to ensure they have in-depth knowledge of everything from equipment operation to surface maintenance.

“Make sure you’re working with someone who has decision-making authority throughout the project, rather than a salesperson who disappears once the contract is signed,” he said.

Arizona’s summer can be demanding on pool systems, but regular maintenance and proactive equipment care can have a positive impact. Keep that routine in place, and your pool equipment is more likely to stay strong all season long.
