Because of its local focus, our central Arizona chapter of Habitat for Humanity is in tune with the challenges that already-strapped families are suffering because of the bad economy.
It’s also in tune with our dismal housing market, and as a result, Habitat, which traditionally builds new homes, was quick to expand its reach when an anonymous donor recently offered it two existing west Valley houses that needed refurbishing before anyone could move in.
Families moved into those newly spruced-up homes in early 2009. Now the group is as open to refurbishing foreclosed and vacant homes as it is to building new ones.
