REPAIRING VS. REPLACING PLUMBING FIXTURES & FAUCETS

When homeowners experience problems with plumbing fixtures they often ask, should I repair or replace?

Most plumbing fixture problems can be repaired and at a lower cost than replacing the fixture.  A handy homeowner can tackle the project themselves saving the cost of a plumber.

Check if your fixture has a warranty.  Most plumbing fixture manufacturers offer warranties against defects.  That faucet that’s dripping or handle that’s stuck or difficult to operate may be warrantied by the manufacturer who will often provide a replacement part for free if you are the original consumer (i.e. you bought the fixture).   Check the manufacturer’s website for details, many of them you can actually send pictures of the defective fixture if you’ve forgotten the model.

If your fixture isn’t under warranty take the defective parts to a hardware store or plumbing supply store where you should be able to purchase a replacement part.

There are advantages to replacing fixtures.  You may be able to repair that 10 year old sink faucet but it’s not going to be shiny and new.  Newer fixtures may also have new features, such as touch controlled kitchen faucets, shower heads that indicate water temperature and even play music for you!  That newer fixture may also be more water efficient.
