Spending Time With Dad

Father’s Day is right around the bend. We thought it might be fun to think of some Arizona things you might do with Dad.

Here are some ideas we like for sons and daughters to share an enjoyable day with Dad.

A heron enjoys some shallow water fishing

The first thing to consider is Dad’s interests and physical abilities, and then develop a plan from there. Here are some thoughts to consider.

Outdoor Activities

We are fortunate to live in a great state where there is no shortage of outdoor activities. Here are some links to inspire you and Dad.

Just About every nook and cranny in Arizona offers some hiking opportunities for every level of hiker. With tens of thousands of trail miles to choose from, here are a few links to get you started.

Trails

With a little digging, you might just find a trail that you and Dad will enjoy. Find local trails specific to your location in Arizona by using an app like

Fishing

Romey and son, Remy, enjoy the a Diamondbacks game

Arizona Game and Fish is sponsoring a free fishing day on Saturday, June 7. It’s a week early for Father’s Day, but hey, save a buck and have some fun.

Ball Game

How about just a good old-fashioned ‘Take me out to the ball game’? The Arizona Diamondbacks are playing the San Diego Padres at Chase Field on Father’s Day. This is an indoor venue unless the weather is good and the roof is open.

Living History Museums

Here are a couple that jump out at us:

  • Pioneer Living History Museum – Located just off I-17, north of Cave Creek Road. This museum is an easy way to step into our past.
  • Sharlot Hall Museum – Adjacent to Historic Downtown Prescott, this could be a great way to spend a day with Dad out of the heat.

Kayaking

Paddle boarding and kayaking are great family friendly activities!

If you live near a river or lake in Arizona, spending some time on the water in a kayak can be pretty relaxing. Here are some links for kayak rentals in different parts of Arizona.

Tubing

Have you tried tubing down the Salt River? That is a relaxing and easy way to spend a few hours. Salt River Tubing is a company that provides tube rentals and shuttle service for typically under $30. A trip can last from 3 to 5 hours or a half trip for 1 to 2 hours.

Scenic Drive

Take a drive down some portion of Route 66. Here is a map of the route through Arizona, where some of the original Mother Road still exists. Towns such as Williams have delightful shops and restaurants you can spend time in along the original split route through town.

*Note – Less active opportunities include visiting a local park for a picnic or simply talking and people-watching. Sitting in the backyard and having a conversation might be all that dad needs to feel connected.

Indoor Activities

In a good portion of our wonderful state, being outside in the middle of June may be a challenge, depending on the temperature. Hiking in 100-degree weather may not be a good idea. There are indoor alternatives.

  • One of our favorites in Phoenix is the Heard Museum. This is a museum that is dedicated to advancing Indigenous American Art. Visit Arizona has a list of statewide locations. Click on the link to start planning your trip.
  • One such museum that is often overlooked is the Arizona Capitol Museum. Located at the State Capitol in Phoenix, this unsung museum has great displays depicting Arizona history and is well worth a visit.
  • Take Dad to his favorite restaurant or find a new favorite for both you and Dad. Arizona Highways featured their favorite restaurants across the state if you need a good place to start looking for something new.
  • Cooking a meal together. Restaurants may not be dads thing. Try creating a new culinary delight at home. Select a recipe together or surprise Dad. We guarantee that a meal prepared together tastes better!
  • Televised sports programs. Watch Golf or NASCAR; the NASCAR Cup Series will be on, and there will be baseball and soccer games to choose from.
  • The Arizona Science Center is not just a place to bring school kids. Their IMAX-like theater has some incredible movies for adults to enjoy. It is a terrific way to share a great experience with Dad.
  • If Dad is a stay-at-home fellow, consider getting out some old photos and taking a nice few hours going down memory lane. You might find some of Dad’s favorite memories flow from the photos, and you can use these to create a Legacy Box that Dad can look at whenever he chooses.

Now, we understand that this list is far from complete. A list of things to do for a day with Dad could never be complete. We would love to hear from all of you about the ways you spend time with Your Dad. Please send us your favorites at info@rosieonthehouse.com.

The best thought to leave with is that spending time with Dad is your opportunity to let Dad know how much you care. In the end, that’s all Dads really want anyway.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!
