A high-efficiency air filter will do a good job of trapping dust, pollen and other airborne particles before they can get into your air conditioning system’s air handler, which can blow the dirt back into your house.
And because it does such a good job, it can quickly become covered with dirt, dust and dander. When it does, it can restrict air flow to the air handler, and that can cause your air conditioning system to work harder and become less energy-efficient.
Prevent an air-flow problem by:
- Using a pleated air filter, which has more surface area to trap particles than a flat filter.
- Changing your filter every month during the summer, even if the manufacturer says you can do it every three months. Arizona is a dusty place, and your filter will get covered and clogged quickly during air conditioning season. A clogged filter makes your a/c work too hard.
- Having a heating and air conditioning pro check your system’s ducts. If they are not sized correctly and you use a high-efficiency air filter, the system could be more likely to suffer from restricted air flow.
