Tree of the week: The Desert Willow!

Tip of the week: Prepare your trees for the monsoon season. We talk trimming and what to do to make sure your trees can handle the wind and rain!

Thin the canopy.
Make sure your irrigation is set correctly.
Don’t over saturate the soil.

The guys discuss the Desert Willow, what to expect, where it thrives, and how to care for it.

Lisa – Has a tree stump in front of her new home. Should she remove it or can she use it as part of her landscape?

Recommendation – Removal can be a big deal, so it’s fine to leave it! We discuss stump grinding and how to care for an area where a stump has been removed.

Sandra – She has a palm with the root ball that’s getting into the water meter box. The utility company says she needs to remove them since it’s on her property. What should she do?

Recommendation – She won’t have to take out the whole tree, just the roots that are encroaching on the meter box. John shares his tips on caring for roots that need to be trimmed back.

Callers:

Randy – He has a tipu tree that was sheered off in a storm and cut back to 5 foot. Will it grow back or should he start over?

Recommendation – Give it a try! These can grow back and already has an established root system to start from. Tipu trees are pretty durable.

Brandon – Has a pomegranite tree with fruit that are not maturing and the fruit is white or yellowish.

Recommendation – Pomegranite trees are fairly tempermental. Check the watering and consider wrapping the fruit in paper bags after they mature some. This keeps the birds out and protects it from the sun.

Tom – Wants a recommendation for a good shade tree at his elevation on the reservation up north.

Recommendation – Contact an arborist in his area. Find one here!

Jennifer’s comes up with an acronym “C.O.N.” to avoid trouble:

C – Contact (you do the contacting. Avoid door to door, etc.)
O – Only deal with those you’ve done the research on.
N – Never believe in something that seems to good to be tree.

Red Flags

Avoid the “buy today and save” types.

If they demand money up-front

Don’t give anyone money that you haven’t verified their phone number & address.
Make sure they’re registered with the R.O.C. and are licensed, bonded and insured.
Never wire money! It’s the same thing as cash!
Avoid callers that ask you to verify your personal information over the phone.

Becky – She just purchased a new AC unit two years ago and now the company that installed the unit is coming back to her asking for more money on additional warranties.

Recommendation – NO! NO! NO! The brand of AC unit she has comes with a 10 year warranty already. This is additional coverage that she does NOT need to pay extra on. Run away Becky! Go to one of the Rosie-Certified AC companies in the valley. Knight Air Conditioning, Integrity Air Conditioning or Reeis. Down in Tucson, visit Intelligent Design and in Pinal County, it’s Desert Sun Heating, Cooling & Refrideraton Inc.

Caller:

Neil – Had a duct cleaning company come out and feels like he isn’t getting what he paid for. He’s also not sure about a plumbing job he had done where a company overcharged him by 7k! Be careful out there!

Recommendation – Duct Cleaning is a common scam. You don’t want anyone cleaning your ducts thats not a Certified Air Conditioning Specialist.

Be wary of flyer’s left on your door and how hotels are susceptible to identity theft.
