Barbara Eiswerth is the founder of the Iskashitaa Refugee Network in Tucson.

The network is designed to integrate UN refugees into the community, educating the public, and reducing food waste by collecting unwanted fruit from neighborhoods and vacant lots.

She talks about a ranch growing over 70 varities of pomegranates at 4200 feet elevation. The grower is determining how high in elevation can they grow.

CALLER: Has a 30 year old healthy mesquite tree. The roots are lifting her hardscape flagstone patio plus other issues. Suggestions besides removing the tree.

October is the time to fertilize your trees. Fall fertilization allows the trees to recharge for spring growth. Root systems are active thru winter even with leaves falling off.

Be a little light on pruning the frost sensitive trees so they can stay warm in cooler nights.

Great time of year to be composting. Start with raking leaves and pile them up somewhere.

Discussion of the right exterior paint for Arizona. Acrylic paint with proper prep can last for years.

Don’t recommend of elastimeric paint but they’re are exceptions.

Acrylic paints has various grades. More resins in the paint, better quality.

Discussion of additives for paint that improve application.

APC offers a 10 year warranty on paint jobs.

Question about a listener who has a paint can with rust on the top. How can it be opened without rust getting into the paint. Plus tips on storage and paint life.

Talk about preparation before you paint. They start with a 3000 psi pressure wash about 12 inches away to get a clean surface free of dust and dirt.

Need to remove loose paint and chalking, especially with stucco.

APC uses a primer sealer called SEAL KRETE.

Filling the cracks with elastomeric patch. For stucco and smooth finish. Never use caulk.
