Wildfire Prevention
Arizona has enjoyed a lush, wet spring this year. Unfortunately, as summer draws closer, our lush, nourished landscape becomes parched and vulnerable to the relentless heat and dryness. The once-refreshing rains are but a distant memory, replaced by the looming threat of wildfires. As temperatures soar and moisture evaporates, the risk of fire intensifies.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
Here are some tips from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to help you prepare your home for wildfire season. Don’t think these tips are only good for people who live in the mountains; these are good tips for all homes in areas where there are unmanaged lots or fields, or where a property line backs up to state or federal land.
- Create a wildfire plan for your family, pets, and home.
- Know how to open the garage door when the power is out.
- Stay informed with the FEMA App. Get community alerts with WEAS (Wireless Emergency Service)
- Check and maintain your roof and gutters so they remain free of debris.
- Install ember-resistant vents.
- Endure a 6-inch vertical clearance from the ground up on exterior walls.
- Clear and maintain decks and covered porches.
- Create a 5-foot noncombustible space around your home
- Extend that noncombustible area as much as possible by maintaining your yard and keeping trees and bushes trim.
