Grand Canyon University Historian Dr. David Dean talks about the history of Memorial Day.

Started as Decoration Day around 1868 to simply decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

The US started the 3 day Memorial Day Weekend at the end of May in 1971.

Take the time to reflect on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice as well as the unofficial kickoff of summer to celebrate.

Explains the tradition of placing poppie flowers on graves.

There are many notible Arizona Veterans. Barry Goldwater, Earnest McFarlin (father of the GI Bill), Ira Hayes, Frank Luke who was called ‘the balloon buster’ and where Luke AFB got its name. Sen. John McCain, Rick Romley and many more who were innovators.

Ira Hayes, a Native American Marine, is one of the Marines who raised the flag on Iwo Jima.

Burton Barr and his connection to the most decorated soldier in history Audie Murphy.

Dr. Dean lists off even more Arizona Veterans and their background.

Farmer Greg of The Urban Farm & Kari Spencer author of City Farming talking apple and peach harvest.

Two kinds of apples grow well here: The Anna and The Dorset Golden.

Apples, peaches, and stone fruits are perfect to perserve. Mulberries tree for fruit and shade.

Kari talks about preserving the fruit. Start with planning of what you want to plant and how you’re gonna preserve all that fruit.

Two ways to canning: Water Bath Canning and Pressure Canning. (Canning in Mason Jars)

Canning jars can be used over and over again. But the lids can only be used once.

Discussion on dehydrating to preserve food.

You can dehydrate fruits like apple chips, vegetables and even trail mix.

You can dehydrate kale for chips or powder.

When planting a tree, usually takes about 3 years to produce fruit.

Notes on another way to preserve fruit: freezing.

CALLER: A home owner is considering radiant barrier but called after Rosie was bashing it. Looking for other suggestions.

More discussion on bogus energy saving products and radiant barriers.

CALLER: Actually had good luck with radiant barriers and explains his situation and the cost of doing it himself. Also a question of going with a smaller A/C unit (seer) and using existing air duct.

Rosie Note: A/C units used 6 times the energy starting and stopping than running nonstop consistant.

CALLER: Got a tough shed he wants to turn into a small cabin and wants insulation suggestions for the walls and subfloor before putting in a cedar floor.

CALLER: When the irrigation system outside is turned on, the water in the house is all hot including the cold water.
