Historians still wrangle with the reason the Hohokams abandoned the area
The 1860’s arrival of Jack Swilling credited as a founding father of Phoenix
Swilling built his 160 acre homestead with the intent his property would become the capital
Thomas Jefferson’s grid system of dividing land and survey points was the basis of the current location of Phoenix
State Capitol Building architecture was constructed with indigenous materials
- Dome design was to show a sign of respectability to the country

The buliding is constructed with granite and tufa stone quarried from the state
Originally the copper dome wasn’t made of real copper due to cost
The top of the capitol building features the Winged Victory weather vane
