Selecting Paint Types

COMMENTARY

• Flat paint for ceilings.  Sheen if requested but not recommended
• Semi-gloss paint for doors and door jambs.  Easier to clean off body oils and markings
• Satin or eggshell paint on walls gives contrast and durability
• Semi-gloss for the ‘wet areas’.  Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry room

Painting Tools

COMMENTARY

• Basic tools you need for a good paint job
  • Good soft bristle brush for cut lines along the ceiling
  • 9 inch roller
  • 3/8 snap roller cover
• For roller painting, a 5 gallon bucket with paint screen attached for more efficient painting
• Painting a straight line trick with paintable caulking smeared on the tape line
• Paint application
  • Paint from the ceiling down with a tapered brush about 4-6 inches
  • Get a good amount of paint on the roller
  • Paint left to right first coat, let dry before second coat

Clean Up After Painting

COMMENTARY

• Brush cleaning and storage
  • Give it a good water rinse.
  • Rub a dish soap detergent with your fingers and rinse again
  • Keep the cardboard carton to retain brush shape
• Rollers
  • Roll off as much paint possible on cardboard or paint sheeting before washing
  • Tool to spin the water off the roller
• Storing paint
  • Paint can brim is completely cleaned out
  • Seal with the cover
