Should I Hire A Handyman Or A Tradesman?

Keep Your Home In Good Repair With A Trusted Handyman

Projects left half-finished at home can build up leaving us with a long honey-do list and not enough time to get it all done. How do you handle the small repairs at your home? Are you able to take care of repairs and installations as the need arises or do you lack time, tools or ability to get things done?

Have you ever started a repair only to find out you are in over your head? A handyman could be the answer to wrapping up a repair or installation needed at your home.

  • Imagine it’s a bright Saturday morning, and you’re ready to tackle a home improvement project. You’ve gathered all the necessary materials to hang a new ceiling fan. But as you set up, you realize that the ceiling is just out of reach of your ladder. To make matters worse, the fan turns out to be heavier than expected. Frustration sets in and you realize you need a handyman!
  • Perhaps you’re dealing with a persistent leak at your kitchen faucet, which has caused damage to the wood in the cabinet below. You’ve replaced washers and tightened everything you can, but the leak persists. Now the faucet needs to be replaced and the wood of your cabinets needs sanding or replacement. To top it off, you lack the tools and expertise for the job. In this situation, a handyman can provide the solution you need.
  • Dings and dents in your drywall can be another headache. Maybe you forgot to replace the stopper at the back of your bedroom door, leading to a ding. Or perhaps your kids’ Star Wars battle resulted in more than just imaginary skirmishes, leaving marks on the walls. Even moving furniture can leave unsightly dents. While you may have attempted repairs, matching the texture might be beyond your skill. This is when a handyman’s expertise in drywall repair can save the day.

There are countless scenarios where having a trusted handyman to call becomes invaluable. Do you have loose or aging fascia board, holes in the drywall that need to be patched and painted, light fixtures or fans that need to be updated? These are all tasks that a handyman excels at, allowing you to delegate the repairs to a professional.

Now you may wonder, what exactly defines a handyman? According to Yigal Lampert of Rosie on the House Certified handyman, Response Crew, “a handyman is someone who specializes in repairing homes and installing products”. They excel at tasks such as repairing doors that stick, fascia, TV mounting, hanging light fixtures, appliance install, and pet door installation. However, it’s important to note that they typically do not handle appliance repairs, air conditioning units, or car battery replacements. Their expertise lies in installing new doors, shelving, plumbing fixtures, and ceiling fans, while flooring and roofing fall outside their scope.

Jennifer Eglin, Operations Manager at Response Crew, emphasizes that their goal is to improve the quality of your living space. They understand the value of creating a space that you can truly enjoy. Finding the right handyman for your needs is crucial. Word of mouth recommendations often yield excellent results as you can establish a relationship with a handyman who understands your unique requirements. This allows them to better serve you and your home.

Each time you call the handyman service, consider asking to have the same handyman come for your next project since consistency and familiarity can make a big difference. When considering a handyman, it’s essential to verify their credentials. Check their license at the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, searching for any complaints, and reviewing their reputation, are crucial steps to ensure you’re hiring a reputable professional.

How the State of Arizona Defines Handyman:

Unlicensed Handyman

A handyman who does work under the amount of $1000, this includes labor and material, does not need a license though he may choose to obtain a license.

If a permit is required, regardless of the dollar amount, the handyman must be licensed.

A Handyman can perform plumbing and electrical tasks that don’t require permitting. For electrical they can replace or repair electrical sockets or replace a ceiling fan for example but, they are not allowed to service or add to the electric panel. For plumbing they can do things like replace a toilet or faucet or install a garbage disposal, but they can’t add a new water line off the main water line.

Minor Home Improvements cap for a Licensed Handyman

The category labeled R-62 Minor Home Improvements at the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, allows for more work to be done, not to exceed $5000. A handyman or handyman company with this type of license can perform remodeling repairs and improvements to existing structures. They cannot do structural work, like removing walls or work on the electrical panel.

What Traits Make A Good Handyman

Yigal looks for the following qualities when choosing a handyman to service his customers:

  • They will be a seasoned worker and one who has experience in several trades.
  • They should have good communication skills and listen to your needs.
  • They should offer good solutions and be resourceful in solving the problem.
  • They should be reliable and show up when scheduled.
  • They will be accurate in estimating. Jobs may take longer than estimated but, they will be able to explain why.
  • They will be organized and clean and have their own tools.

A Good Handyman Is Better Than A Home Warranty!

A good handyman could be a replacement option for a home warranty. Many times, trying to get something repaired under a home warranty can be problematic. The home warranty may not allow you to choose your service provider and often the item that breaks is not covered. If you have a qualified handyman that you work with, they can act as a home warranty provider of sorts within the realm of their handyman capabilities. Yigal has a Response Crew Annual VIP Membership Program that saves the homeowner money on the hourly rate. Yigal says to “think of the membership like a home warranty, only better”.
