For homeowners thinking about adding a fresh coat of paint – whether inside or outside the home – those triple-digit temperatures can feel like a deal breaker. According to painting professional Russ Byers of ACP Painting – a Rosie on the House Certified Partner – summer painting isn’t off the table…it just requires a smarter approach.
Seasonal painting has changed over time
Arizona’s heat has always been part of the equation, but in recent years, it’s become more extreme and more persistent, and those summer temps seem to creep in earlier and earlier every year. That shift has changed how professionals approach their work.
“Summer painting in Arizona has always required careful planning, but over time, we’ve definitely seen temperatures become more extreme and prolonged,” Byers said. “Early in my career, we could push later into the day, but now we have to be much more strategic.”
On the positive side, Byers said that paint technology has improved significantly, and modern products are much more durable and heat-resistant than what professionals used 15-20 years ago. Prepping the surface remains the same – the crew starts by power-washing the exterior and allowing the surface to dry completely before painting. Caulking, cleaning, and minor repairs are also done. Caulking also needs time to dry before it gets too hot.
Timing, proper application techniques, and high-quality products are crucial for achieving lasting results in Arizona’s summer climate.
The challenges of painting in extreme heat
High temperatures don’t just make the process uncomfortable; they also directly affect how paint behaves. Exterior surfaces can become far hotter than the surrounding air, creating tricky conditions for proper application.
“The biggest challenge is how quickly materials react to heat,” Byers said. “On exteriors, surfaces can reach temperatures well above the air temperature, which can cause paint to dry too fast and not adhere properly.”
Interior projects aren’t immune either: garages, ceilings, and poorly ventilated spaces can get extremely hot, affecting the application, comfort, and safety of the crew. This rapid drying might seem like a benefit, but it often leads to uneven finishes, visible lap marks, and a shorter lifespan for the paint job. Is summer painting safe? The short answer is yes, but only under the right conditions.
“It is absolutely possible to paint in Arizona during the summer, but it must be done carefully. If surface temperatures exceed 120-140°F, we recommend waiting to protect both crew safety and the quality of the paint application.”
Careful planning, such as choosing optimal work hours and timing, helps projects succeed even during the hottest parts of the year.
Timing is everything
The key to summer painting in Arizona: start early. Very early.
“We often start at sunrise to maximize cool hours. We stay ahead of the sun by working in shaded or cooler areas and start early to finish by 1 p.m. This minimizes heat exposure and supports a quality job,” Byers said. “Hydration, breaks, and heat monitoring are routine for the crew during summer painting.”
This approach protects the crew and ensures the paint has the best possible conditions for adhesion and curing. Understanding how paint reacts in high temperatures is key to avoiding costly mistakes. High heat speeds drying, which may hurt quality if the paint dries too quickly. Proper timing and technique are crucial for a lasting finish.
Ultimately, being patient, precise, and taking extra care with timing matters more than rushing when dealing with high Arizona temperatures.
Choosing the right paint for the desert climate
Not all paints are created equal, especially when it comes to withstanding Arizona’s intense sun and heat. Investing in high-quality materials can significantly improve appearance and longevity.
“Acrylic paints designed for extreme climates perform best,” Byers said. “We typically use premium lines from Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards, formulated for UV resistance and flexibility. These products hold up much better against fading, cracking, and peeling in Arizona conditions.” Premium paints cost more but reduce how often you’ll need to repaint over time.
Safety first!
Staying safe and achieving a quality finish in the summer heat starts with the basics: staying hydrated, taking regular breaks, and wearing proper protective gear.
According to Byers, ACP Painting is one of the few residential painting companies in Arizona that use safety tie-offs and harnesses when working on rooftops or above the roofline. The crew installs tie-off points and requires fall protection harnesses to minimize the risk of accidents.
“We also maintain a strong safety culture through regular safety talks and intentional training,” he said. “It’s because of this that we recently earned a Summit Level 1 Safety certification through Nolan Consulting Group.”
It’s also important to monitor surface temperatures, avoid painting in direct sunlight, and thoroughly prep surfaces before starting. For interior projects, maintaining good ventilation and consistent climate control can improve comfort and outcomes.
For homeowners taking on their own projects, the summer heat can introduce a whole new set of pitfalls. According to Byers, many issues stem from underestimating the heat’s impact.
“One of the biggest mistakes is painting at the wrong time of day,” he said. “Another is using lower-quality paint or skipping proper surface prep. We also see people apply paint too quickly or on hot surfaces, which can lead to streaking and premature failure.”
The key takeaway here is that summer painting in Arizona isn’t about avoiding the season – it’s about working smarter. With the right products, timing, and experience, you can still achieve long-lasting results even in extreme heat.
For homeowners considering a summer project, experienced professionals who understand the nuances of desert conditions – from reading surface temperatures to timing each step of the process – will help your painting project become a success.
