A pool is often the centerpiece of the backyard, and a long-term investment in home value and lifestyle. Whether you’re starting from scratch, updating an aging pool, or envisioning a full resort-style backyard transformation, planning and expert guidance can make all the difference.
According to Arnold Elzy of E & E Pools – a Rosie on the House Certified Partner – today’s homeowners have more design options and upgrade opportunities than ever, making it easier to customize a pool that fits both their space and their budget.
Start with a plan
Before construction begins, homeowners should take time to consider their overall goals for the project. Budget, functionality, and design preferences all play key roles in shaping the final result. Elzy emphasizes the importance of thinking through these details early.
“Homeowners should consider their budget, shape of the pool, and water features,” Elzy said.
The size and shape of a pool influence not only the visual appeal but also how the space will be used. Families may prioritize shallow play areas or lap lanes, while those focused on entertaining might lean toward integrated water features and expansive decking.
Water elements such as waterfalls or sheer descents can add visual interest and create a relaxing atmosphere, but they should be planned alongside the overall layout to ensure they complement the space rather than overwhelm it.
Understanding the timeline
Elzy said that one of the most common questions homeowners ask is how long it takes to build a new pool. While timelines can vary based on design complexity and municipal permitting requirements, most projects follow a structured sequence that helps keep construction on track.
“The process of building a new pool starts with our office communicating with the customer and explaining the construction schedule as well as every step of the process that can be expected,” Elzy said. “Our team works diligently to communicate with the customer, making sure they are aware of each phase.”
The most basic pool construction timeline lasts around two months. The initial design first goes to the engineers, then E&E gets a building permit approved from the city.
“Depending on which city and the season, it can take around two weeks, sometimes more, to get the permit,” Elzy said. “Once we have that, then we can lay out and dig the pool.”
Having a clear understanding of each phase helps homeowners feel confident and prepared throughout the project. While waiting for permits or engineering approvals can test patience, these steps ensure the pool meets safety and structural standards that protect the investment long-term.
Popular features in today’s pool designs
Modern pool construction is increasingly focused on combining functionality with aesthetics. Many homeowners are looking for features that elevate their backyard into a personal retreat while remaining practical for daily use.
Sheer descent waterfalls offer a sleek, contemporary look while creating soothing ambient sound. LED lighting has also transformed pool design, allowing homeowners to customize colors and enhance nighttime ambiance. Travertine decking continues to grow in popularity thanks to its durability, natural appearance, and ability to stay cooler underfoot in warm climates.
When remodeling makes more sense than rebuilding
While building a brand-new pool is exciting, many homeowners may not realize that remodeling an existing pool can often be the more practical and cost-effective solution. Updating older materials and equipment can dramatically improve both appearance and performance.
“We always advise remodeling your existing pool rather than building a new one. Around 10 years old is when a homeowner should be remodeling their pool – but this can vary depending on what the homeowner wants to do,” Elzy said.
Over time, pool surfaces and finishes naturally wear down, which is why interior resurfacing is one of the most common renovation projects. Elzy noted that homeowners frequently choose upgrades that enhance both longevity and style.
In addition to visual upgrades, equipment improvements can also lead to long-term savings. Variable speed pumps allow homeowners to adjust water circulation levels, helping reduce electricity usage without sacrificing performance.
“The most common upgrades we see homeowners ask for are remodeling with mini pebble or pebble tech interior, since, usually due to age, their current one is deteriorating,” he said. “You can also upgrade your pump to a variable speed pump to save money on energy costs.”
Creating a complete backyard escape
For many homeowners, the pool is just one part of a larger outdoor living vision. Designing a cohesive backyard that integrates multiple features can transform the space into a true extension of the home.
“To achieve what we call a ‘paradise backyard,’ consider adding other elements like a 90-100 foot perimeter pool with water features, a pergola with a misting system, an outdoor kitchen including a fire pit, and some artificial turf,” Elzy said.
These additional elements provide comfort and functionality that extend the usability of outdoor spaces year-round. Pergolas with misting systems offer shade and cooling during hot summer months, while outdoor kitchens and fire pits create gathering spaces for entertaining.
Artificial turf and putting green areas provide low-maintenance landscaping that stays fresh and clean without excessive watering or upkeep. Design cohesion is especially important when combining multiple backyard features. Elzy explained that professional guidance helps homeowners maximize space while maintaining visual balance.
“We use our 22 years of experience and knowledge to advise customers of sleek design choices for their backyard layout to achieve their vision and make the most of the space while staying budget-friendly,” he said.
Bringing the vision to life
Designing or renovating a pool is a significant undertaking, but with expert help, homeowners can create outdoor spaces that serve their needs for years to come. Whether the goal is a simple, elegant pool or a full-scale backyard resort, working with experienced professionals helps streamline the process and minimize surprises.
With careful design, strategic upgrades, and a clear vision, a backyard pool can become far more than a home improvement project – it can be a daily escape just steps outside the back door.
