Any device that gets as much of a workout as this item is bound to react sooner or later. Simple solution: Replace it. Flush handles cost as little as $4, and are easy to install. Here’s how:
- Lift the top off of the toilet tank and unhook the chain that’s attached to the old handle.
- Loosen the mounting nut that attaches the flush handle to the inside of the tank, and remove the old handle. NOTE: these are typically reverse threaded, so turn clockwise to remove and counterclockwise to install.
- Screw the new flush handle into place and attach the chain to it. Replace the tank cover. Done.
A tip: Some flush handles are made for the front of a tank, and others are for the side. Notice where yours is located so you’ll buy the right kind.
If you want to try to salvage your old handle, clean the mounting nut with an old toothbrush dipped in white vinegar, and make sure there’s at least half an inch of slack in the chain.
