Most manufacturers warranty their new garage doors for about three years. Still, you can probably expect yours to last at least 15 or 20 years.
That said, a study by Harvard University estimates that the average home is 34 years old. So if you have never replaced your garage door, it’s probably time.
Here are two other reasons to replace an older garage door:
- New doors are energy efficient. Garage-door windows typically have double panes, but older versions had leaky single panes. And many new garage doors are made at least partly from insulated steel.
- Garage doors built after 1992 have more safety features, like door openers with a redundant safety device. So in addition to reversing on contact, every post-1992 door has a photo eye.
