Don’t turn off the electricity before you go. You’ll need to leave it on so your security system, outdoor lights and air conditioner can operate while you’re gone.
Instead, turn off nonessential circuit breakers, like the ones that operate lights in the guest room, bathrooms and laundry room, for example. Leave on the switches that operate the security system, outdoor lights and lights in the main living areas.
For extra security, rig the TV and radio to timers, too so your house “sounds” occupied.
A tip: Once you figure out which switches you should leave on and turn off, label them with red and green stickers so you won’t have to figure it out next time, or when you get home from your trip.
