What Is That Mystery Noise?

What Is That Mystery Noise?

We had a caller that had an odd noise that he was dealing with in a brand new build! He was able to record it for us to play on air and we received several creative ideas for what could be causing it. Below we compiled the thoughts we gathered from our listeners:

Troubleshooting:

1 | They need to turn off everything to the house including cable/ satellite, and then start turning everything back on…one by one.

2 | Record the mystery sound early in the morning with every electrical system in the house (as much as possible) turned off. Then plug in or turn on every high powered yet quiet system in the house, e.g., lights, electric blankets, space heaters, curling irons, the clothes iron, lamps, etc. and record the sound again.

3 | If the frequency of the mystery sound increases, then check whatever is touching the electrical meter.

Next:

4 | Take a stethoscope and hold it to the slab

5 | Get an expert using ultrasonic detection to listen to the intricacies of the noises and the whereabouts at all times, to have a better understanding of what IS the origin of this noise. It may be continuous but not to the human ear.

Pipes/Vents

1 | The mystery noise could be a drain issue in the house with water or air moving through drains. It could also be related to pool or pool equipment in the backyard echoing through the house.

2 | We have very similar sounds from bath exhaust fan flappers and from the flapper in the range hood exhaust cap. My guess would be the latter.

3 | Attic vent flap or motor moving in the wind

4 | I would carefully check any ductwork that is venting to the outside. For example the over the range hood etc. Some of this duct work will have metal flappers that open when the fan is on and then close to help prevent drafts when not in use. If the way the air is flowing across the vents outside like with a breeze or any wind it can cause a negative pressure and pull the flap open and closed.

5 | Radon Fan

6 | Could it be the post tension slab?

A/C

1 | We had the same clunk and it was the a/c filters that didn’t fit.

Critters:

1 | Secret noise is roof rats

Extraterrestrial:

1 | Obviously a ghost

2 | Poltergeist

3 | It’s obviously spirits from the other side.
