A better question might be: What can’t I control?
Home automation has gotten so sophisticated that you can remotely control everything from your lights to your air conditioning to your security alarm.
Some of the other devices you can control: your furnace, TV sets, home theater equipment, stereos and fire detectors.
If you get electronic draperies, you can even open and shut them using the same universal remote control or console as you use to turn on the TV.
Here’s a possible “good morning” scenario using home automation:
In the morning, your “smart” house can lower the thermostat to cool the house off before you wake up, and turn on some low music, a different kind in every room, if you want, to start to wake the family. A few minutes later, the bedroom lights can turn on, dimly at first, while the coffee maker in the kitchen starts brewing. By the time you need to get up, the lights and music will elevate to regular, daytime levels. Once you leave for work and the kids head for school, the house will turn the a/c back up a few degrees, activate the security alarm and turn on sensors on your home’s exterior doors and windows.
