WHAT’S THE QUICKEST, CHEAPEST WAY TO UPDATE THE BATHROOM?

Update your faucets, towel rack, showerhead, doorknobs and cabinet hardware, and you’ll update the look of your bathroom.

Two tips:

1. Make sure they match. If you choose a silver-toned shower door or grab bars, match them with silver-toned faucets and hardware. If you choose gold tones, stick with gold throughout the room.

Opt for items from the same manufacturer to ensure the colors match, but don’t limit yourself to one style. While everything from the toilet tissue holder to the drawer knobs to the shower curtain should look similar, a swirling towel rack paired with rectangular cabinet handles can add some drama and interest to the room.

2. Stay away from shiny brass and chrome fixtures. They’re yesterday’s news. Give your room a soft, luxurious feel with hardware, racks and faucets in oil-rubbed bronze, brushed chrome or brushed nickel. To liven up classic chrome, experiment with new shapes. Faucet heads that are long and curved look modern and elegant. Rigid, rectangular faucets add a trendy, edgy look. Don’t rush out and buy something in every shape you find, however. If you like a dramatic faucet or fantastic showerhead, make that fixture be the room’s centerpiece, and keep other shapes simple. Some other ways to add luxury to your bathroom without spending a lot:

  • Splurge on one fixture that will make your bathroom unique. A rainfall showerhead screams “luxury,” while a telephone-style bath faucet adds a touch of vintage style.
  • Paint your cabinets. Dark, chocolate browns are the “new neutral” and easily cover marks and dents. If you like brighter colors, make the cabinets the room’s focal point by painting them dark red or green.
  • Crisp khaki is the color of the year for walls. In a small room, though, a cheery blue or a deep, dramatic red can make a high-fashion statement. Trying painting a single wall in a bright accent color to create the illusion of space in a tiny room.
  • Invest in a new set of plush towels and a matching shower curtain to tie the room together and distract from minor imperfections.
  • Upgrade your lighting. Replace those outdated, exposed globe bulbs with sconces that uplight—in the same finish as your faucets, of course.
