There are two primary residential window types in Arizona; sliding sash and casement.
Sliding Sash Windows
A sash is the frame around the pane of glass and the frame that holds the them. Sliding sash windows come in single and double hung styles and have one or two window sashes that slide vertically or horizontally.
Double hung windows have the advantage of excellent ventilation. Comprised of two vertically sliding sashes, homeowners can completely open the top sash or the bottom sash, or even open both sashes part way for enhanced airflow.
Horizontal sliding windows are commonly referred to simply as sliding windows or slider windows.
Casement Windows
Feature hinges or pivots at the upright side of the vertically hung sash. It usually opens outward similar to a door. The operable sash on this window is called the casement sash.
We are going to focus on casement windows and the latest technology that makes them easier to operate.
The History of Casement Windows
A casement window, also known as a crank, lever, or cam handle window, is the earliest form of movable windows.
The encyclopedia resource, Britannica, explains that the British and German custom was to have the windows opening outward. A medieval English example exists at the Falstaff Inn, Canterbury, Kent, Eng., with casement windows below fixed windows, or lights, all composed of small leaded panes. The French casement commonly has two meeting leaves that open inward, requiring careful craftsmanship to prevent weather from penetrating them. These French casements were adapted in the United States chiefly as ways to give access onto balconies and porches, and in this doorlike form, they are known as French windows, French doors, or casement doors.
Casement windows provide excellent natural ventilation, especially in hot climates. Allowing more control of ventilation than flush-opening windows, they can be hinged to open outward and angled to direct breezes into the room. Prior to evap cooling and air conditioning windows were the primary way to achieve to air ventilation and cooling.
The Casement Windows of the 21st Century

Awning windows are hinged at the top and swing out from the bottom, gliding open and shut with the turn of a handle. They are a great option for places that need extra ventilation and light.

Get a Grip
The simple, smooth, and durable mechanism was developed based on Universal Design Principles and is designed to be a solution for all people regardless of their age or physical ability. Engineered with a comfort grip for easy use and smooth operation, its horizontal tab surfaces are curved for comfort and to accommodate many grip styles. The thickness of the knob helps reduce pinch grips for those with arthritic hands. Edges around the grip surfaces are beveled to reduce pressure points when operating.
How It Works
The new hardware works in a way similar to a dimmer switch. Users open and close windows by easily sliding the operator up to open and down to close the window, providing an easier experience than cranking.
Its ball-bearing design and Kevlar-reinforced belt offer a long-lasting, smooth operation. The design was tested to extremes to ensure that the mechanism holds up to dirt, wear, and tear.
The hardware knob incorporates a wing-back feature to guard against unwanted contact with the window jamb. Its brake system allows you to open the window exactly how far you want to — and it secures in place.

The Easy-Slide Operator hardware was awarded the 2021 Best Window & Door Product by The International Builders’ Show.
