Don’t rely on grass and dirt under swing sets and monkey bars if you want your child to land safely and softly. Instead:
- Cover the ground under all play equipment with at least six inches of a pliable ground cover, like wood chips, sand or rubber mulch.
- Choose a location in your backyard that is naturally free of rocks and other hard or sharp objects.
- Extend the ground cover six feet from the perimeter of the playset—in all directions. That way, a child on a swing won’t be able to fly beyond the ground cover if she jumps off in full swing.
