HOW CAN I PROVIDE A SOFT LANDING IN MY KIDS’ OUTDOOR PLAY AREA?

Don’t rely on grass and dirt under swing sets and monkey bars if you want your child to land safely and softly. Instead:

  • Cover the ground under all play equipment with at least six inches of a pliable ground cover, like wood chips, sand or rubber mulch.
  • Choose a location in your backyard that is naturally free of rocks and other hard or sharp objects.
  • Extend the ground cover six feet from the perimeter of the playset—in all directions. That way, a child on a swing won’t be able to fly beyond the ground cover if she jumps off in full swing.
