MY MEXICAN FAN PALMS ARE LOSING FRONDS, SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

I planted about 3 Mexican Fan Palms about three weeks ago and they have been losing a number of fronds. The nursery told me they would in the first year. Is that true? I have also been watering every night; my prod easily goes down 20+ inches into the moist soil. Am I watering to heavy?

EXPERT ANSWER

Yes, that is correct. I’d tie up the extra fronds at the top making a protective budle and remove when you see the new shoot have emerged and are the same height as the old dead bundle. Keep fronds keep moist but not soggy.

They look pretty normal except the one that hardly has any green fronds. They often lose lots of fronds but the center growth bud remains green. As the palm gets rooted in the soil, the growth bud should start pushing new fronds out of the center. Don’t kill with kindness, water once every 5-7 days.
