Hello Susan, We get this question all the time, usually it is accompanied with I believe I have birds in my fireplace. Your fireplace is like a big megaphone, everything will echo down the flue pipe as if it is right in your room. Although it should be checked out,there could be something loose and should be looked at before it blows completely off and becomes damaged beyond use or damages something else on the way down. This is always reminds me of the children’s book “Secret of the Haunted Chimney” that story ended with Raccoons in the chimney. Many people hear noises and most of them are real problems that need to be addressed.
