Our Favorite Red, White, and Blue Memories and Traditions for America’s 250th

As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day and the nation’s 250th birthday, there’s no better time to revisit some of our favorite stories exploring the people, places, and traditions that helped shape our country.

If there’s one thing Rosie Romero loves, it’s America. From fascinating presidential history and flag etiquette to Arizona’s role in the semi-quincentennial celebration.

Find our love of history in these podcast sessions offering a look at the history, heritage, and hometown pride behind the Fourth of July:

Presidential Secrets, Founding Fathers, and America’s Great Experiment

One of our favorite conversations explored the surprising stories behind America’s presidents and founding fathers. Arizona’s Official Presidential Historian, Tom Babbage, shared little-known facts that reveal the human side of some of the nation’s most iconic leaders.

Founding Fathers create the Declaration of Independence

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison are three men who played major roles in the founding of the United States. Washington was the nation’s first president, so there was no playbook, and a few of the precedents he set are still in place today.

Listeners learned about Grover Cleveland’s secret surgery, Roosevelt surviving an assassination attempt while delivering a speech, and how an unsanitary medical procedure ultimately led to the death of President James Garfield.

Listeners heard details about Lincoln’s modest political experience, Henry Clay’s influential career despite never becoming president, and Dwight Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex.

Complementing those insights was a discussion with Grand Canyon University historian Dr. David Dean, who explored the Revolutionary War, loyalists, the Enlightenment, and the philosophical influences that helped form early America.

The Stars and Stripes

Every Fourth of July, American flags appear across neighborhoods, businesses, and community celebrations. How much do you know about the flag itself?

One of our most popular patriotic features explored the history, myths, and proper etiquette surrounding the flag. Did you know there is no definitive proof that Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag, despite the story being well-known in American folklore?

The article also examines how the flag evolved as new states joined the Union and clarified the difference between the original 13-star flag and the famous Star-Spangled Banner displayed today at the Smithsonian.

Those who need guidance on properly displaying and caring for the American flag should look no further. From illumination requirements after sunset to proper positioning alongside state flags, our article gives readers a better understanding of the traditions that accompany one of the nation’s most recognizable symbols.

Celebrate the 4th of July

Arizona’s Western Heritage Lives on at the World’s Oldest Rodeo

Few traditions capture the spirit of the American West quite like rodeo, and Arizona is home to one of the most legendary events in the country. The World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott has been celebrating cowboy culture, horsemanship, and frontier traditions since 1888, making it one of the state’s most patriotic celebrations.

Held annually around Independence Day, the rodeo draws visitors from across the country to experience bull riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, and steer wrestling. The event functions as a tribute to Arizona’s ranching heritage and the rugged determination that helped shape the American West.

As the nation marks its 250th birthday, the World’s Oldest Rodeo is a reminder that many of our most cherished traditions endure today, uniting audiences with the values, skills, and spirit of earlier generations.

Scottsdale’s Biggest Fourth of July Celebration

This year, Scottsdale’s signature Independence Day celebration is going bigger than ever.

Returning to WestWorld for its 13th year, Scottsdale 4th will serve as one of Arizona’s premier celebrations, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence while also marking Scottsdale’s 75th anniversary.

The family-friendly event boasts indoor activities, bounce houses, water-balloon competitions, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, the Parade of Heroes, and the return of the 406 Rodeo. Guests can enjoy the Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers Summer Slider Eating Championship, M Culinary’s Backyard BBQ, and a massive American flag created from 1,000+ cupcakes.

The evening concludes with what organizers are calling the largest fireworks display in Scottsdale history, providing a spectacular finale worthy of America’s birthday.

Tucson’s Sentinel Peak Park celebrates its 29th 4th of July Fireworks display at ‘A’ Mountain.

Arizona America250: Telling Our State’s Story

As communities prepare to celebrate, Arizona is ensuring its own stories are part of the celebration. Our guest, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, highlights the Arizona America250 Commission. This statewide initiative was created to commemorate the nation’s founding while spotlighting Arizona’s contribution.

Programs mentioned on the podcast include the Road to 250 traveling museum, Passport250 experiences, Operation Freedom March, special historical publications, and a statewide community events calendar.

The commission’s vision emphasizes preserving history, supporting civic engagement, and celebrating the voices of all Arizonans. Through partnerships with museums, libraries, educators, and community organizations, Arizona America250 is creating opportunities for residents to learn more about the state’s past while helping shape its future.

As fireworks light up the sky, the semiquincentennial serves as a reminder that America’s story is still being written – and Arizona will continue to play an important role in chapters to come.

250 Things We Love About Arizona

In honor of the nation’s 250th birthday, Arizona Highways took on a massive Arizona challenge: identifying 250 things that make the Grand Canyon State special.

The resulting feature serves as a love letter to Arizona’s landscapes, history, culture, food, and people. From iconic destinations such as the Heard Museum to historic restaurants like El Chorro, plus local favorites and experiences, the list aligns with Arizona Highways‘ mission to promote travel. It encourages readers to discover something new with every road trip, whether it’s a short drive or a long haul to the corners of the state.

While no list could ever capture everything Arizona has to offer, the collection – and our podcast with Editor Robert Stieve – will provide plenty of inspiration for future adventures and remind listeners why the state remains one of the country’s favorite destinations.
