WHAT IS POLYBUTYLENE PIPING?

Polybutylene (PB) is a form of plastic resin that was used extensively to make water supply piping from 1978 until 1995. Because of its low cost and easy installation, plumbers at that time viewed PB piping systems as the pipe of the future and used them as a substitute for traditional copper piping. But they learned that PB wasn’t such a good choice after all.

Problem: PB is notorious for ruptures and leaks. It appears that chlorine in the public water supply reacts with the PB piping and the polymer that binds some of the joints. This reaction causes the pipes to flake and become brittle. The pipes also can suffer from ruptured joints. If your home’s plumbing pipes are made from PB, you need to replace them.

Solution: Because the problems with PB piping are so widespread, consumers filed what was at the time the largest class-action suit in U.S. history against its manufacturers. However the settlement is now closed.  If you have PB piping you should contact a licensed plumber.
