Arizona Farm Bureau’s Julie Murphree’s guest is Kami Weddle-Van Horn, Director Of Food Safety And Quality at Rousseau Farming Company talking watermelons and other melons.

Kami’s family and science background in Yuma. The growing seasons in Yuma make it ideal for many different crops to grow and keeping the soil healthy.

Food safety is her top priority after the e-coli outbreak in 2007 and the improvements made after that.

Story of Arizona grown sweet corn better than Iowa!

Kami describes what her job entails as a food safety director. Includes taste testing melon for sugar and ‘brick’ content. She explains what ‘brick’ means.

Process of watermelon harvesting. Its still human picked for a reason. When do they plant for watermelon? Its a very healthy fruit for hydration.

Watermelon have good insulation.

Harvesting process produce 2500 bins full of watermelons each day during the season. Hand picked and pitched into bins. 10-20 pounds per melon.

Besides watermelon and sweet corn, other summer crops produced by Rousseau Farms.

Significant production of cantalopes and honeydew melons.

Arizona farms noted on a national scale because of the food safety protocols in place. The 15 types of leafy greens grown.

First documented watermelon dates back to ancient Egypt.

How about finding a shady spot at home? Where can you go to get some fresh air without being exposed to the direct sun? You can spend time outside even in the heat of summer, providing you have adequate shade. Any shaded surface on a hot afternoon will be about 30 degrees cooler than in the direct sun. Let’s map out some shade zones for your backyard…
