Thanks to the National Pest Management Association for these tips:
- Deal only with a qualified and licensed pest-management company. Ask to see the license or other credentials of the pest professional who comes to solve your pest problem.
- Rely on the Rosie on the House certified contractor network when shopping for a pest-control firm. Rosie’s contractor-partners have been vetted by Rosie himself, and Rosie recommends them. For a list, visit www.rosieonthehouse.com and click on “Certified Partners.”
- Ask friends and neighbors to recommend pest control companies they have used.
- Shoo away the operator who shows up at your home uninvited and offers to give your house a free inspection for pests. He or she may try to scare you into authorizing immediate and costly treatments.
- Get more than one estimate.
- Take your time making your decision. Choose someone who is knowledge as well as skillful in the application of pesticides and whose judgment you trust.
- Before signing a contract, understand the nature of the pest to be exterminated, the extent of the infestation, and the work necessary to solve the problem.
- Find out if the pest control company has liability insurance to cover any damages to your house or furnishings during treatment.
- If your professional offers a guarantee, learn what it covers, how long it lasts, what you must do to keep it in force and what kind of continuing control, prevention and management are necessary.
- Buy value, not price. Beware of bargains that sound too good to be true.
