TREE OF THE MONTH: DESERT FERN

Form: Graceful, lacy, large shrub or small multiple trunk tree if pruned as such, more upright when young to spreading with age.

Seasonality: Briefly deciduous during late spring prior to flowering.

Size: Slow to moderate growth to 20 feet with greater spread.

Leaves: Tiny green leaflets, fern-like appearance, turn yellow, then drop mid-spring and are quickly replaced. Provides light filtered shade.

Flowers: Creamy white puffballs, 1/2″ diameter, in terminal clusters.

Fruit: Flat, 4-6 inch bean pods, constricted around seed, turning dark brown.

Stems/Trunks: No thorns.

Range/Origin: Mexico.

Comments: High litter mid-spring, moderate rest of year.
